Amelia Sears

Amelia Sears became a social worker in 1903 and served as Assistant General superintendent of United Charities from 1919-1930.  She was the director of the Bureau of Public Welfare, Cook County Civil Service from 1914-1919.  She is also the author of The Charity Visitor, a Handbook for Beginners in 1913, possibly the first textbook for the field of social work.
